| Biographical summary |
Nikos Kazantzakis was born in Heraklion, Crete, in 1883. He studied law at the University of Athens and, later, philosophy at The University of Paris-Sorbonne. He translated Friedrich Nietzsche, Charles Darwin and Henri Bergson into Greek and wrote poems, stories, novels and diaries of his travels. His most famous book, "Zorba the Greek," was published in 1946. Its appearance in English in the United States, in 1954, made its author a runaway success that exposed him to the rest of the world. Kazantzakis died in Germany in 1957 and was buried in his birthplace. In 1922, during his stay in Berlin among young communist revolutionaries, Kazantzakis met Rachel Lipstein (later: Lipstein-Minc). At that time, Rachel was a member of a cell group of Marxist-Leninist women. Rachel Lipstein Minc was Born in Lodz, Poland, in 1899. She later was known as a a French poet and author of children's books. Rachel Lipstein-Minc died in Kibbutz Tzora, Israel, in 1978. |
