Description
The collection consists of personal documents from the Hoffmann family archive documents relating to the Nazi persecutions of the Hoffmann family and various items which were collected by Julius Hoffmann during his stay in Ferramonti camp, Italy. In addition, there are some documents and materials related to brother in law, Gustav Hergershausen, who was arrested in the ghetto of Theresienstadt.

Biographical summary Julius Hoffmann was born in Elberfeld, Germany, on May 11, 1885. His father, Heinrich Hoffmann, owned one of the biggest hotels in Elberfeld, "Hoffmanns Hotel Falk". In 1915 Hoffmann married Klara Richter. In 1922, Hoffmann inherited his father as the "Hotel Falk" owner and soon after was appointed head of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants in Lower Saxony (Verband der Hotels, Restaurationen und verwandter Betriebe Niedersachsen). In 1933, after Hitler came to power, the Hoffmann family had to leave Elberfeld and sell the hotel. They moved to Leipzig, where Hoffmann became active in various Jewish organizations. In 1936 Hoffman and his wife left Germany and moved to Denmark. Three years later, in 1939, they tried to immigrate illegally to Palestine, but were caught and transferred to internment camp in Ferramonti, Italy. In 1944 they managed to Immigrate legally to Palestine, and settled in Haifa. Julius Hoffmann died in Haifa in 1972.
Ownership history The collection was permanently deposited in the National Library of Israel by Julius Hoffmann himself, on October 1950.
