Biographical summary Arthur Ruppin (Rawicz 1876 - Jerusalem 1943) was sociologist and Zionist thinker. In his youth he lived in Magdeburg, where he worked as a trade agent and at the local court. In 1908 he immigrated to Palestine and was one of the founders of Tel Aviv. From 1926 professor for sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Ownership history After Ruppin's death his diaries were transferred to Central Zionist Archives. Years later, efforts were made to decipher the diaries, which were written in shorthand following the Stolze system, and eventually Karla Weissner produced a transcription in 1958. Five sets of the diaries have been produced, for Ruppin's four children and for the Zionist Archives. The set in our holdings was donated by Rupppin's grandchildren in July 2012.
Language Note The materials are mostly in German, only the last pages of the diaries were written in English.
