המכון למדעי המזרח נוסד ב-1926 והיה מראשוני המכונים באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. באוסף חומרים ארכיוניים אישיים ומקצועיים של כמה מחוקרי המכון למדעי המזרח, וכן של מזרחנים יהודים-גרמנים שהיו קשורים אליהם. בין התעודות: התכתבויות, רשימות מחקר ודיווחים הנוגעים לפעילות החוקרים במסגרת המכון.

Description
Most of the documents in this collection are from 1910-1960. It contains personal and professional archival material of some of the School's members, as well as German-Jewish scholars who were connected to them. Among the documents: correspondence, research notes and reports on members' activity in the School. The archival material is divided into five series: four of them are titled with the name of the scholar whose materials are included in them, and a fifth series includes general materials related to different scholars or the School itself.;רוב החומרים באוסף זה מתוארכים בין השנים 1910-1960. באוסף חומרים ארכיוניים אישיים ומקצועיים של כמה מחוקרי המכון, וכן של מזרחנים יהודים-גרמנים שהיו קשורים אליהם. בין התעודות: התכתבויות, רשימות מחקר ודיווחים הנוגעים לפעילות החוקרים במסגרת המכון. החומר הארכיוני מחולק לחמש סדרות: ארבע מהן נושאות את שם החוקר שחומריו מצויים בהן, וסדרה חמישית כוללת חומרים כלליים הנוגעים לחוקרים שונים או למכון עצמו.

Biographical summary המכון למדעי המזרח נוסד ב-1926 והיה מראשוני המכונים באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. עם היווסדו עמד בראשו פרופ' יוסף הורוביץ מאוניברסיטת פרנקפורט, אשר שימש מנהל-פוקד של המכון. במהלך שנות השלושים והארבעים התרחב המכון ותחתיו התפתח העיסוק במזרחנות באוניברסיטה העברית, לרבות החוג לשפה וספרות ערבית. על תלמידי המכון ומוריו נמנים בכירי המזרחנים בתולדות היישוב ומדינת ישראל. בראשית שנות השבעים הפך למכון ללימודי אסיה ואפריקה.
Founded in 1926, the School of Oriental Studies was among the first institutes in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Upon its foundation, the School was headed by Prof. Josef Horovitz of Frankfurt University, who directed the School in absentia. During the 1930s and 1940s the School expanded and was responsible for the development of Orientalism and Oriental Studies in the Hebrew University, including the Department of Arabic Language and Literature. Among the School's students and teachers are some of the top Orientalists in the history of the Yishuv and the State of Israel. In the beginning of the 1970s the School changed its name to The Institute of Asian and African Studies.
