Leopold Zunz Archive

The archive includes four sub-groups: Zunz' papers, documents, manuscripts and correspondence, the papers and documents of the "Verein für Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden", the written estate of Lazarus Bendavid, and the materials of the Zunz Foundation (Zunz-Stiftung). According to the guide to the Zunz archive written by Gotthold Eliakim Weil, the First Part of the archive (Series 1-9) comprises all the files marked with the letters A-Z and the Second Part (Series 11) comprises individual envelopes. Series 10 is Part Three and includes later accessions.

Biographical summary Leopold Zunz (Detmold 1794 - Berlin 1886) was a German-Jewish scholar and pioneer in the field of the "Science of Judaism" (Wissenschaft des Judentums). Being educated at the Samson Freischule in Wolfenbüttel, he later studied at the university of Berlin and gained his PhD at the university of Halle in 1821. He was one of the founders of the "Verein für Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden", worked later as the director of the Jewish school of Berlin and of the community's teachers seminary. He supported the Reform movement in Judaism.
Ownership history The archive was originally stored at the "Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums" in Berlin, and was sent by the principal, Ismar Elbogen, to Palestine before World War II. In 1939 it was permanently deposited in the National Library.
Language Note Most of the materials are in German, but also large parts in Hebrew. Few pieces were written in English
