Mordecai Manuel Noah (Philadelphia 14.7.1785-New York 22.5.1851), playwright, diplomat, journalist, utopian. From 1813 US consul at Tunis, where he secured release of Americans enslaved recalled by Monroe because of Judaism, to wide protest. 1825 attempt to found Ararat, Jewish homeland at Grand Island NY. 1827-1828 active in Tammany Hall. |
