Arie Ludwig Strauss (1892–1953), born in Aachen was a literary scholar, author, poet and teacher. He studied philology in Berlin and Munich. After WWI he worked as independent author, as editor at the Welt Verlag in Berlin, and as drama advisor at the theater of Düsseldorf in 1925. Beginning in 1918 he associated with HaPoel HaTzair and worked as the editor of HaAvodah. Between 1929 and 1933 he taught German literature at the university of Aachen. He worked with Martin Buber, whom he had met in 1913, and married Buber's daughter Eva in 1925. He received his PhD at the university of Frankfurt with a dissertation on Hölderlin in 1928. In 1929 he received the qualification as professor, with an additional work on Hölderlin. Until the teaching prohibition by the Nazis in 1934 he taught at the university of Aachen, and was director of the German department. In 1935 he emigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Hasorea. From 1938 until 1949 he was teacher at the Youth Village in Ben Shemen. Then he moved to Jerusalem and became professor of comparative literature at Hebrew University. Besides research on literature, he also wrote poetry and short stories, in German and later in Hebrew.

Biographical summary Arie Ludwig Strauss was born on October 28, 1892 in Aachen. He studied modern philology in Berlin and Munich until 1914, when he was enlisted to World War I. In 1916 he returned to Berlin after having been injured, did not continue his studies and lived as an independent author instead. At first he became editor at the Welt Verlag in 1919-1920, in 1925 he became dramatic adviser for 1925-1926 at the theater in Düsseldorf. Already in 1908 he had begun writing for Jewish magazines and worked as author and translator from Yiddish. In 1913 he met Martin Buber, whose daughter Eva he married in 1925. In 1928 he received his PhD at the university of Frankfurt with his dissertation on Hölderlin, in 1929 he received the qualification as professor from the university of Aachen with another work on Hölderlin. From 1929 until 1933 he taught at the university of Aachen, the teaching license was removed by the Nazis but reinstalled for a while until 1934. He resigned in that year and decided to leave Germany, and moved with his family first to Jerusalem and then to Kibbutz Hasorea. In 1938 he was appointed teacher at the Youth Village of Ben Shemen, where he worked until 1949. Due to health problems he moved back to Jerusalem and taught at Hebrew University. Already during his first visit to Palestine in 1924 he began to write, for example the drama Tiberius in 1924, after the second visit in 1934 he wrote German poems on Erez Israel, which were translated in 1951 to Hebrew. He was one of the first German Jews to write poetry in Hebrew. He died in Jerusalem on August 11, 1953.
