In this work, painted in Paris, the great Jewish painter Marc Chagall recalls with nostalgia his childhood in Belarus. In the days before tap water in the homes of Eastern Europe, many people eked out a living by carrying buckets of water. The fiddler in the picture appears often in Chagall’s work, recalling perhaps his grandfather who played fiddle in a klezmer bands.
