חתן: זכריה בן משה כלה: ג'והר בת יהודה קשאני עדים: שלום בן ראובן, אשר בן אברהם, יעקב בן יצחק קדושים. This is a book-form Persian ketubbah, comprised of four leaves (eight pages), of which only four pages are inscribed. Book form ketubbot were common in Teheran and other Persian towns in the early 20th century, imitating a parallel custom among the local Muslims. The booklet ketubbot contain six to eight leaves and are decorated in the manner of Islamic books. Usually, the first page of the text is the most elaborately ornamented. This simply produced Teheran contract follows the standard formula. The opening page begins with blessings of good fortune etc. and followed Proverbs 18:22 (“who ever finds a wife has found ...”). Each page is divided into framed coloured panels, and each panel contains two to three lines. Note that the dowry sums are written in a different ink (p. 6) indicating they were added by the scribe only at the wedding after being properly appraised (i.e. the contents of the dowry). The first signature i.e. of Shalom, son of Reuben, is most likely the scribe. Total dowry and tosefet: 1000 methgalin of silver, 100 methgalin of gold, and 100 tuman Beth Tzedec Congregation, Reuben & Helene Dennis Museum Toronto, ON Canada CR 24 Leeds University Library Leeds England Ms. Roth Roth, Cecil Oxford England נייר |
