Die Monatsschrift wurde erstmals im Oktober 1851 veröffentlicht und erschien zunächst monatlich, seit der Jahrhundertwende ca. alle zwei Monate. Nach insgesamt 83 Jahrgängen musste das bedeutendste Organ der Wissenschaft des Judentums 1939 sein Erscheinen einstellen.

Library has vol.83 in different copies. Copy 1 is a photomechanic reprint of the original volume (with added t.-p. bearing imprint: Tübingen, J.C.B.Mohr, 1963). It includes an article of Selma Täubler-Stern printed for this volume but suppressed by the German censor. Copies 2-4 are the volume as it appeared in 1939 (without Täubler-Stern's article). An additional copy consists of separate offprints or proofsheets of the articles bound together (including that of Täubler-Stern) with t.-p. supplied in handwriting: R PB 787.
