  • שיר זה נכתב בתקופת מלחמת העולם השניה בזמן ששלושים אלף צעירים מן היישוב התנדבו לשרת בצבא הבריטי . הלחן המקורי כפי שכתב אותו ישששכר מירון מוכר היום יותר בתור הקול השני המלווה את הלחן. הלחן זכה לעיבוד ולביצוע של להקת הוויברז (The Weavers) האמריקאית והגיע למקום השני במצעד הפזמונים האמריקאי בביצוע זה בשנת 1951. השיר זכה לתפוצה נרחבת והפכה להיות אחד השירים הישראליים הנפוצים בכל הזמנים. המעבד המוזיקלי יוליוס גרוסמן הוסיף בשנת 1946 חלק שלישי ללחן ובעקבות זאת התנהל מאבק משפטי לגבי זכויות היוצרים של השיר.
    מילות השיר פורסמו בספרו של יחיאל חגיז, "בקצב הזמן: זמרים ופזמונים", 1951, עם הציון "אי-שם, 1941".
