It was on this day that tradition has it that the famous Talmudic scholar Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai died. Before his death he gave to his pupils the secret of life which became the basis of the mystical and esoteric movement known as the Zohar. Rabbi Bar Yochai was burred In Meron near Safed and each Lag B'omer tens of thousands of observant Jews go to Neron to celebrate the life of The Rabbi. Also over the whole of Israel bonfires are lit to signify that while the Rabbi was divulging his secret to his pupils the whole place was infused with light even when it was night.
