'"כך הולכים השותלים" הוא סיפור עלייתה ושקיעתה של ההתיישבות העובדת, המסופר דרך עיניו של אחד מבניה. גיורא אילון מסרטט פרקים-פרקים מקורותיו של הכפר הבדיוני "גבעות". החל בעלייה לקרקע ושנות הקמתו ההרפתקניות והמפרכות, המשך בצמצום משקי העזר ועקירת הפרדסים, ועד הפיכתו לפנינת נדל"ן נחשקת. בלשון חדה ומדויקת, הומור עוקצני ומידות שוות של פיכחון אכזרי ושל חמלה אוהבת, רוקם גיורא אילון את סיפורו של הכפר בשרון, שהוא גן עדן וגיהינום. נכרכים כאן, בלפיתה עזה, אוהבת ושונאת, זני צמחים ועצים ואנשים. אלה שנקלטו בהצלחה, ואחרים שכשלו להכות שורש, ולצדם האורחים שנטו ללון והשכנים שמעבר לגדר, כמו ילדי המעברה או העוזרת הפלסטינאית. אצל אילון הטרגדיות רצופות צחוק, הקומדיות רדופות צללים, והגברים והנשים שבמקום אחר היו שקופים או בגדר קוריוז הם גיבורי מחזה שמוארים בכל מורכבותם ולעיתים גם גדולתם, גם אם לא פעם הם מוכרעים על ידי כוחות גדולים מהם'. -- מהמעטפת האחורית.
