"ההיסטוריה המפוארת של צפת במאות האחרונות זכתה למחקרים רבים. מעט מהמחקרים התמקדו בצפת של מחצית המאה ה-19 ותחילת המאה ה-20. בתקופה זו התרחשו אירועים ותהליכים משמעותיים שהשפיעו ועיצבו את עתידה של צפת. אחד התחומים המרכזיים שלא זכה למחקר נפרד ומעמיק הוא התפתחות החינוך בצפת. ספר זה, הסוקר בצורה מעמיקה ורחבה את התפתחות החינוך בצפת ביובל השנים 1870-’ֵ1920, מנסה לגולל את הסיפור המופלא של התפתחות החינוך בעיר, מחינוך אורתודוקסי-מסורתי לחינוך עברי לאומי. הספר מבוסס על מקורות שונים ומגוונים, שואב מידע ממאגרי מידע רבים, משלב גם שירים וציטוטים של הדמויות שפעלו בתחום החינוך בצפת באותן שנים, ומוסיף נדבכים חדשים לאירועים ההיסטוריים שהשפיעו על התפתחות החינוך בצפת. הספר מגבש לעיני הקורא מסמך שיכול ללמד רבות על צפת ותושביה, על מערכת החינוך בה ועל מערכת החינוך בארץ ישראל של אותן שנים." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
