"על גבעה נישאה, אי-שם באירופה הרחוקה, ניצבה טירה בה חיה שושלת מלוכה, ועל השושלת איש לא ידע, ורק אני עדות יחידה לקורות הטירה. כך סיפרה הלנה ויותר לא אמרה ולא דיברה. אולי הוסיפה משפטים ספורים, משפטי סיום או משפטי פתיחה, לעיתים מעט, לעיתים יותר, וכל היותר היה על ההווה וכל המעט היה על העבר, ועתיד לא היה. בתה של הלנה, אליזבת, היא ליזי דורון, גדלה בצל כנפי השתיקה. בקובץ סיפורים ראשון "למה לא באת לפני המלחמה", היא יוצאת מן השתיקה ומתארת את הלנה של אחרי המלחמה ואת האווירה בבית שברחוב הניצחון פינת רחוב הגבורה. לדבריה "הלנה בחשה בין דמיון למציאות ובין עמימות לבהירות; מחקה ראיות ובדתה עובדות ובנתה עולם משלה". עם זאת, היא מעידה כי כל הארועים המופיעים בספר - כולם אמת לאמיתה. הקשר בינם לבין האמת - אמיץ. הקשר בינם לבין המציאות, גם אם רופף - אינו מקרי בהחלט." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
