"בגיל 18, עם סיום לימודי התיכון, קרל אובה קנאוסגורד עובר לעיירת דייגים קטנה ומרוחקת, בחוג הצפוני, לעבוד כמורה בבית-ספר. אין לו עניין אמיתי בהוראה, ולמעשה גם לא בכל עבודה אחרת. כל מטרתו היא לחסוך קצת כסף לטיול ולמצוא פינה שקטה שבה יוכל להתמסר לכתיבה. בהתחלה הכול נראה נפלא: הוא מצליח לכתוב כמה סיפורים קצרים, התושבים בכפר מתגלים כמכניסי אורחים והוא זוכה לתשומת לב מחמיאה מכמה נערות יפות; אלא שכשהלילות מתחילים להתארך - חייו תופסים תפנית אפלה. הסיפורים שהוא כותב מתחילים לחזור על עצמם, הוא מפריז בשתייה לעיתים תכופות, ניסיונותיו להיפטר מבתוליו מסיבים לו רק השפלה, ולדאבונו נדמה לו שהוא מתחיל לפתח רגשות רומנטיים דווקא כלפי תלמידה שלו. אל ההווה מחלחלים זיכרונותיו מימי התיכון, והמרחק הפיזי אינו מצליח למנוע מצילו הכבד של אביו להעיב על חייו בצפון הרחוק." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
