"בשנת 1939 עגנה בנמל הוואנה האונייה “סנט לואיס”, ועל סיפונה תשע מאות יהודים שנמלטו מגרמניה והמתינו לאישור ירידה לחוף. הילד דניאל קמינסקי" חיכה על הרציף להוריו ואחותו עם דודו יוסף, הסמוך ובטוח שהאוצר השמור במשפחתם מאז המאה השבע-עשרה, ציור שמן קטן בחתימת רמברנדט – יקנה את האישור המיוחל. אלא שהתוכנית לא צלחה, האונייה על נוסעיה שבה לגרמניה, והתקווה לאיחוד המשפחה נגוזה.שנים אחר כך, ב-2007, צץ הציור, דמות של ישוע, במכירה פומבית בלונדון. אליאס, בנו של דניאל קמינסקי, בא מארצות-הברית להוואנה כדי להתחקות אחר גורל הציור, ולברר מה הקשר בין הציור לבין מעשה רצח שאירע ערב יציאתם החפוזה של הוריו מקובה. רק חוקר כמַריוֹ קוֹנדֶה יוכל לעזור לו. “כופרים” הוא רומן המדלג בין תקופות היסטוריות שונות: אמסטרדם של המאה השבע-עשרה והקהילה היהודית שבה, פרעות ת”ח ות”ט ביהודי פולין, הוואנה ומיאמי במאה ה-21, ובין כולן שזורה חידת הציור של רמברנדט" . -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
