"בליל נובמבר של חג המהפכה, שמזג האוויר הפטרבורגי הסוער מגיע בו לעכירותו המרבית, נקלע ליובה אודוֹיבצב לדו־קרב עם ידידו־יריבו התמידי מיטישַׁטְייב במוזאון המכון לחקר הספרות, מוסד שמכונה בפי כל "בית פושקין". בכתיבה מודעת לעצמה ומלאה לבטים, אנדריי בּיטֹוב משרטט את דיוקנו של גיבור בברית המועצות שאחרי סטלין: אינטלקטואל וחוקר ספרות שמעז לחרוג במחקריו מהשורה, אבל בסופו של דבר הוא תוצר של המשטר, אינו מסוגל למעשה של ממש בחייו האישיים והמקצועיים. ואולי הגיבורה האמיתית של בית פושקין היא הספרות הרוסית לדורותיה, שהספר כולו נטוע ומסופג בה, המאירה באור אירוני את ה(אנטי) גיבור של ביטוב, את סביבתו ותקופתו. בית פושקין הוא רומן לנינגרדי־פטרבורגי, עיר שפיוטר הגדול הקימה כ"צוהר לאירופה", והמשמשת רקע ליצירות רבות בספרות הרוסית; הוא גם הרומן הרוסי הפוסט־מודרני הראשון." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
