"נקודת המוצא של "מעטפות ריקות" שוברת לב: ילדה מוכה שהוריה נפרדו מספרת על ילדות קשה וכואבת שבהמשכה חיים שלמים של חיפוש קשר. כחלק מהניסיונות לתקשר עם בני משפחתה היא כותבת להם מכתבים אבל מקבלת בתשובה מעטפות ריקות באופן סימבולי, משום שהן חסרות את ההבנה, הקבלה ותשומת הלב שהיא כל כך כמהה למצוא בהן. גיבורת "מעטפות ריקות" היא זו שיש לה אח עגום ונוטה להתקפי אסטמה, זו שנעצו בה מבטים מזרי אימה אם לא גמרה את כל האוכל מהצלחת לפני שקמה מהשולחן, זו שאמה ושני אבותיה שתלו בה, כהגדרתה, ניגונים צורמים, זו הלכודה בנישואים אומללים לבעל החוזר ואומר לה שאם תשתנה הכל יהיה בסדר. והיא אכן משתנה – לא כדי לתקן את נישואיה, לא כדי למלא את הציפיות הקשוחות, הצפודות או לרכך את המבטים העקרים שהתרגלה להיות מוקפת בהם, אלא כדי לסלוח, סליחה שמאפשרת לה להמשיך את חייה למרות הכאב. "מעטפות ריקות" הוא בעיקר סיפור של סליחה ושל קבלה עצמית" -- מן המעטפת האחורית של הספר המודפס.
