"שנת 2027. איה, רווקה אמריקנית בת 38, טסה לביקור בישראל. עשרים שנה לפני כן היא ביקרה כאן עם קבוצת נוער, התאהבה בהראל ובאווירה של ישראל, וחלמה לבנות בה את עתידה. אך דרכי השניים נפרדו כשחזרה לארצות הברית. משפחתה הגרעינית הרוסה, קשריה עם גברים לא צלחו, ועתה היא עובדת על דוקטורט ביחסים בינלאומיים במזרח התיכון. מייל פתאומי מהראל מציע לה לבוא לבקר בישראל, והיא נדלקת ונוסעת בלב מלא תקווה וציפייה. כבר במטוס מתרחש אירוע בעייתי דרמטי, ובהמשך שהותה בארץ איה חווה אכזבה מאהבתה, והמציאות בשנת 2027 טופחת על פניה: מיטב המוחות היצירתיים נטשו את הארץ, חוקי הדת שולטים, אין השקעות מחו”ל, שחיתות והזנחה שוררות בכול. ולמרות כל זאת הישראלים ממשיכים לתמוך בשלטון הקיים, משום שאינם רואים באופק כל אופציה אחרת. אלא שרוח הזמן, ושאיפתם המשותפת של תושבי המדינה על גוניהם השונים, מביאות איתן אופציה חדשה, והם מאמינים שהודות לה יזכו לחיים טובים באווירה דמוקרטית" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
