מטמורפוזות (Metamorphoses, מיוונית: "שינויי צורות") היא יצירתו המפורסמת ביותר של אובידיוס, ומיצירות המופת הגדולות ביותר בתרבות המערב (ואולי גם הספר הקלסי הפופולרי ביותר באלפיים השנים האחרונות). זהו אפוס לא שגרתי בחמישה-עשר ספרים, שנכתב קודם ליציאתו של אובידיוס לגלות. היצירה היא אסופה בת עשרות שירי עלילה, הנשענים במידה כזו או אחרת על הסיפורים והמיתוסים של העולם הקלסי ושל המזרח הקרוב או שואבים מהם השראה, כשכל שיר נגמר, בפועל או ברמז, בשינוי צורה. היצירה מתחילה בבריאת העולם ונגמרת בהאלהה של יוליוס קיסר, שמת בשנת 44 לפני הספירה. אבל מה שקורה בתוך המסגרת הזאת הוא כל דבר חוץ מאפוס ליניארי רגיל. הקשר בין שירי העלילה הוא בדרך כלל מעגלי, ולפעמים אסוציאטיבי: הדמות הזאת נזכרת בדמות ההיא, שאנסה את הדמות השלישית, וכך הלאה וכך הלאה – עולם ומלואו של צללים, תאוות, הזיות ובלהות, עולם רוחש אלים, נימפות, ומי שהמציא את כל אלה: האדם". -- מן המבוא.
