Jews and Judaism in the political theology of radical Catholic traditionalists

Enlarge text Shrink text

Reforms of the Second Vatican Council, including the "Nostra aetate" declaration, were met with opposition on the part of Catholic conservatives. A prominent and influential group of radical Catholic traditionalists, the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX, founded in 1970) rejects "Nostra aetate", modern democracy, and religious tolerance. During the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, great efforts were made for reconciliation with the SSPX, but they failed, partly due to the antisemitism that permeates the Society. A scandal broke out when Bishop Richard Williamson publicly denied the reality of the Holocaust. Although the SSPX expelled Williamson and distanced itself from his pronouncements, it retains anti-Jewish views based on supersessionist theology. Traces the roots of present-day radical Catholic traditionalism. Its ideological forefather was the Irish priest Denis Fahey (1883-1954), whose writings greatly influenced both the antisemitic American "radio-priest" Charles Coughlin and SSPX founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Fahey's baleful influence is still alive today not only in the SSPX, but among other similarly-minded groups and persons, e.g. the Catholic extremists E. Michael Jones and Robert Sungenis, who maintain connections with neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers.
