"באמצע העשור הראשון של האלף השלישי, בדיוק כשמתחילים החמסינים הנוראיים של חודש מאי, למעשה, ביום השואה, מיד בתום צפירת האבֶ ל מגיחה מג'ונגל הרחובות של תל אביב מכונית שחורה, חלונותיה אטומים והיא מזרזת בצפצופים את תמר, רעייתו של מיכאל קליינהאוס, להיכנס למכונית ולסגור ת'דלת. תמר פורסת את ידיה ומסמנת לו מה העניינים איתך. אבל ההוא שב וצופר, אז תמר שולחת לעברו אצבע משולשת ... הנוהג במכונית השחורה אינו חושב פעמיים, הוא נותן גז, תמר קופצת לצד והוא שועט קדימה, תוך שהוא עוקר את דלת המכונית של מיכאל, כמו הייתה כנף ציפור בפה של חתול. מיכאל, שנמצא במין חופשת־אבל על מות אביו, פונה אל החוק, ובדומה למיכאל קולהאס של קלייסט מבקש שייעשה לו צדק - אבל איפה צדק בתקופת החמסינים הזאת? תמר מסבירה לו שפה זה המזרח התיכון, אני עשיתי לו ככה והוא עשה לנו ככה - אבל מיכאל אינו מבין את המשוואה. ביום הזיכרון לחללי מלחמות ישראל חוטף מיכאל מכות רצח ברחוב, וביום העצמאות הוא מנהל לוחמה בשטח בנוי" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
