"סאפנה סינהה היא צעירה שעובדת כמוכרת בחנות למוצרי חשמל בדלהי. משכורתה הצנועה מספיקה בקושי לקיום משפחתה הענייה. כשהיא פוגשת בסיום תפילה במקדש מיליארדר שמציע לה לרשת את כס המנכ"ל של קבוצת איי-בי-סי - אם רק תעמוד בשבעה מבחני חיים - היא משוכנעת שהוא מתבדח. אך כשהיא מגלה שמדובר בהצעה ממשית, היא מסכימה לאתגר, על אף חששותיה וחשדותיה. בשרשרת המבחנים שניקרית בדרכה, מסייע לה שכן נאה שבו ספאנה מאוהבת בסתר. כל מבחן שספאנה עוברת הוא למעשה שיעור שבוחן לא רק את יכולותיה הניהוליות, אלא גם את סולם הערכים שעל פיו היא חיה. במהלך הרומן היא נתקלת בדמויות מכל מעמדות החברה ההודית: כוכבות בוליבידיות, כפריים עניים, שוטרים מושחתים ואוהבים תמימים. אך האם היא תעמוד בשבעת המבחנים ותהיה מין סינדרלה מודרנית? ומיהו אצ'ריה, המיליארדר המוזר שמפעיל אותה ומעורר את חשדותיה? מדוע הוא בחר דווקא בה, ואילו סודות גדולים היא צפויה לחשוף?". -- מעטפת אחורית.
