In the shadow of the shtetl

Enlarge text Shrink text

Based on interviews collected by Veidlinger and his co-workers in 2002-09, in the Vinnytsya region of Ukraine, among elderly Jews living in small towns. Deals, inter alia, with the Holocaust period, when the Vinnytsya region was divided between the German-ruled "Reichskommissariat Ukraine" and Romanian-annexed Transnistria. Ch. 7 (pp. 158-185), "Life and Death in Reichskommissariat Ukraine", is based on interviews with four survivors. Of them, Arkadii Burshtein from Sobolivka and Tatyana Palatnikova (Marinina) from Teplyk were sent to the Raigorod labor camp. Moyshe Kupershmidt from Bratslav was captured in 1941 by the Germans as a Red Army soldier, and in 1942 fled to Transnistria. Shloyme Sklyarskii from Zhornishche survived a mass murder in nearby Ilnytsya (where 800 Jews were killed in May 1942) and later joined Soviet partisans. Ch. 8 (pp. 186-231), "Life beyond the River: Transnistria", is based on testimonies of Jews who survived ghettos and camps in Transnistria. Contains, also, Ukrainian Yiddish folksongs from the Holocaust period. Notes that Jews who were evacuated from the Vinnytsya region in 1941 and returned in 1944-45 were confronted with antisemitism.
