"כשתומס מתעורר במעלית, הדבר היחיד שהוא מצליח לזכור הוא שמו הפרטי. אין לו שום זיכרונות על הוריו או על ביתו, והוא אינו זוכר גם איך הגיע למקום שבו הוא נמצא. הזיכרון שלו ריק. אבל הוא לא לבד. כשדלתות המעלית נפתחות, תומס מוצא את עצמו בתוך קבוצה של נערים שמקבלים את פניו ב'קרחת' - מתחם ענקי מוקף חומות אבן. הנערים ב'קרחת' בדיוק כמו תומס, אינם יודעים למה או איך הם הגיעו לשם. הם יודעים רק שבכל בוקר עד עכשיו נפתחו בחומה דלתות אבן עצומות שמובילות אל המבוך שסובב אותם, ובכל לילה הן ננעלו; שאחת לשלושים יום נשלח במעלית עוד נער ל'קרחת', ושאף אחד אינו רוצה להיתקע במבוך אחרי רדת הלילה. יום אחרי תומס מגיעה במעלית נערה - הנערה הראשונה שנשלחה למקום אי פעם ... משהו בבואה של הנערה מעלה בתומס זיכרון עמום. משהו אומר לו שאם רק יצליח להגיע אל הסודות האפלים שמסתתרים בתוך מוחו, יצליח לפתור את התעלומה שנקלע אליה". -- מעטפת אחורית.
