"גון פולר, חוקר צבאי מבריק וכריזמטי, מקבל מכתב מטריד מדודתו בטסי, ובו היא מספרת על דברים מוזרים שקורים סביבה´ ועל אנשים שאינם באמת כפי שהם נראים. הוא מחליט לבדוק במה מדובר, ומנצל את ימי חופשתו כדי לבקר אותה בפרדייז, עיירת החוף האולטימטיבית בפלורידה; חופים זהובים, שמש אינסופית ושמיים כחולים כל השנה. פולר מגיע ומגלה שדודתו מצאה את מותה במה שהמשטרה מכנה תאונה ביתית מצערת. חקירה ראשונית משכנעת אותו שלא מדובר בתאונה. יומיים נוספים בסביבה ופולר מבין בוודאות שמשהו גדול ומטריד קורה בפרדייז. אבל גם לו אין מושג מה באמת מסתירים הדקלים על החוף. פשע מאורגן, למשל. חופי פלורידה, מסתבר לפולר, הפכו לשער הכניסה האחורי של ארצות־הברית, שדרכו מוברחת הסחורה המבוקשת ביותר במאה העשרים ואחת: בני־אדם. לפולר ברור שאת החובה לעצור את התופעה הטילה עליו דודתו במכתב ששלחה לו לפני מותה, והוא נכון לשלם כל מחיר כדי לעמוד במשימה" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
