רָאִינוּ לְפָנֵינוּ גֶּבֶר יָשֵׁן בַּשָּׂדֶה, רֹאשׁוֹ מֻנָּח עַל אֶבֶן. זֶה הָיָה יַעֲקֹב אָבִינוּ, שֶׁחָלַם אֶת חֲלוֹם הַסֻּלָּם שֶׁבּוֹ מַלְאָכִים עוֹלִים וְיוֹרְדִים. כַּאֲשֶׁר יַעֲקֹב הִבְחִין בָּנוּ, עֵינָיו נִפְעֲרוּ לִרְוָחָה. "הַאִם הִנְּכֶם מַלְאָכִים מֵהַסֻּלָּם?״ קוֹלוֹ רָעַד. לְרֶגַע הָיִינוּ כְּמוֹ מְשֻׁתָּקִים וְלֹא יָדַעְנוּ מָה לַעֲנוֹת. וְכָךְ לִוִינוּ אֶת יַעֲקֹב, עַד שֶׁפָּגַשׁ אֶת רָחֵל הַיָּפָה לְיַד הַבְּאֵר וְהִתְאַהֵב בָּהּ. אַתֶּם בֶּטַח שׁוֹאֲלִים אֶת עַצְמְכֶם הַאִם מַקְפֵּצַת־הַזְּמַן הִצְלִיחָה לְהַקְפִּיץ אוֹתָנוּ שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, וּלְגַלּוֹת יַחַד עִם יַעֲקֹב שֶׁנָּתְנוּ לוֹ אֶת לֵאָה בִּמְקוֹם רָחֵל, וְעוֹד שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים, כְּדֵי לִרְאוֹת שֶׁקִּבֵּל אֶת רָחֵל, וְעוֹד... וְעוֹד... עַד שֶׁ... זוֹכְרִים אֶת סֵפֶר בְּרֵאשִׁית?. -- מן הכריכה האחורית.
