באמצע לילה אפל וקר של חודש דצמבר מצלצל הטלפון בביתו של אריק מריה ברק, פסיכיאטר מומחה לטיפול בטראומה. על הקו מפקח המשטרה, יונה לינה, שמבקש את עזרתו הדחופה: בבית החולים בסטוקהולם שוכב נער פצוע קשה ומחוסר הכרה שעבר תקיפה חמורה. אם אריק יצליח להפנט אותו ולהבין ממנו מי רצח את הוריו ואת אחותו הקטנה, אולי המשטרה תספיק לאתר את אחותו הגדולה לפני שהרוצח יגיע גם אליה. עשר שנים חלפו מאז הפעם האחרונה שאריק השתמש בהיפנוזה, ומאז נשבע לעולם לא להפנט שוב. כשלבסוף הוא נעתר לבקשת מפקח המשטרה ומפר את שבועתו, פוקדים אותו ואת משפחתו אירועים אלימים ובלתי צפויים המאיימים להרוס את חייו. עד מהרה מוצאים עצמם אריק ומשפחתו, ויונה, מפקח המשטרה, לכודים בתוך חלום בלהות המגיע לשיאו בערב חג המולד. דומה שלא השלג הצחור היורד מהשמיים השחורים וגם לא הקור המקפיא שבחוץ מצליחים לצנן את להט הנקמה והטירוף האחראים לכל המתחולל סביבם.
