לגיבורת הספר כמה רחוק את מוכנה ללכת אין שם. כולם מכנים אותה "חמודה". היא נשואה באושר לגבר מקסים ומתחשב, יש לה עבודה מעניינת וחיים מלאים ומספקים. רק דבר אחד חסר בתמונת החיים המושלמים שלה - תינוק. דווקא היא, שהכול תמיד הלך לה כל כך בקלות, נאלצת ללמוד בדרך הקשה שלא תמיד משיגים את הדבר שרוצים יותר מכול. ברנע־גולדברג מתארת בדרך ייחודית ומרגשת את המסע שאליו יוצאת הגיבורה שלה. גיבורה שהיא במידה רבה גם היא. זהו מסע סוחף ומטלטל, זרוע בבוּרות ובאטימות, אך גם מלא אומץ לא מצוי וישירות כובשת. במהלך המסע תגלה חמודה את פניהם האמיתיות של הקרובים לה וגם כמה אמיתות כואבות על המקום שאנחנו חיים בו, לצד רוך, חסד ואהבה במקומות לא צפויים. היא תיאלץ להניח לאשליית השליטה ולהפקיד את גופה, את נפשה ואת רחמה בידי המערכת, ובעיקר - להתבגר ולעמוד על שלה, להחליט כמה רחוק היא תהיה מוכנה ללכת כדי להשיג את שכמהה אליו נפשה. "לכאורה זהו עוד אחד מאותם ספרים צפויים, שבמרכזם אישה חזקה שמתגברת על כל המכשולים ומשיגה את מבוקשה, במקרה הזה תינוק, ואגב כך מעניקה לנו שיעור מזורז ב'העצמה נשית', 'אמונה עצמית', 'הצלחה כנגד כל הסיכויים' וכיוצא באלה.
