אַן שֶרְלִי, האסופית, מתחילה חיים חדשים. היא נוסעת ללמוד בקולג´, בעיר הגדולה, הרחק מהכפר הקטן אֶבוֹנְלִי . לא קל להיות הג´ינג´ית מאי הנסיך אֶדוּאַרְד בין כל התלמידים מהעיר, אבל מזלה משחק לה והיא מוקפת חברות אמת – פְּרִיסִילְיָה וסְטֶלָה חברותיה הוותיקות ופִיל קלת הדעת, חברתה החדשה והמקסימה. יחד יתנסו הבנות בחיים האמיתיים – הן ינהלו משק בית, ילכו לנשפים ולטיולים, יחוו אהבות ראשונות, ובין לבין אפילו ילמדו. גם בבית, באֶבוֹנְלִי, ממשיכים להתרחש דברים מעניינים – החברות הקרובות של אַן מתחתנות והופכות לאימהות, דֵיוִוי לא פוסק מתעלוליו, וגם עצב גדול ימלא את לבה, כשתאבד חברת ילדוּת אהובה. ובתוך כך, אַן תקבל הצעות נישואין – לא אחת ולא שתיים – וגם גִילְבֶּרְט ינסה להגיד לה מה הוא מרגיש, אבל אַן העקשנית תמשיך לחכות לאהבת האמת. כשהיא תבין מיהו, האם זה יהיה מאוחר מדי? זהו הספר השלישי בסדרת הספרים, שכתבה לוסי מוד מונטגומרי, המלווים את חייה של אן מילדות עד לבגרות.
