A biography of a Jew (né Pinter) who was born in 1925 in Nitra, Slovakia and grew up in Vráble, near the Hungarian border. Pp. 51-78 relate his experiences in the Holocaust. The members of the family suffered from the many anti-Jewish laws that went into effect, beginning in 1939, and were forced to close their grocery store, depriving them of their livelihood. After the German invasion of Hungary in March 1944, Porat and his father were sent to labor camps; his mother was deported to Auschwitz and killed. Porat escaped from the camp and fled to Budapest, where he went into hiding, helped by his aunt. After the liberation he joined the Soviet army and then returned to Vráble. He emigrated to Eretz Israel in 1947. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
