פרשנות נעשתה לנושא מרכזי בהגות בת זמננו בשל האמונה שזו פעילות שאין מנוס ממנה: כל הבנה, כך נטען, היא פרשנות וכולנו מפרשים בלא הרף. הספר על פרשנות והבנה קורא תיגר על הטענה ש"הכול פרשנות". רות לורנד בוחנת מגוון פעילויות קוגניטיביות, שהפרשנות איננה אלא אחת מהן, ומאפיינת כל פעילות על פי הבעיה המעוררת אותה. פרשנות כתבי הקודש משמשת פרדיגמה מרכזית בדיון, והמסקנות מועתקות לתחומי הפרשנות החילונית. פרשנות, טוענת לורנד, איננה תולדה של מכניזם קוגניטיבי ואין היא נדרשת בכל עניין. זו פעילות רציונלית, מודעת וסלקטיבית החותרת לשיקום שלמותו של מושאה תוך קשרי גומלין עם פעילויות קוגניטיביות אחרות. פרשנות היא פלורליסטית מטבעה. היא מציגה אפשרויות, וערכה אינו נקבע רק על פי ההתאמה לעובדות. פרשנות טובה מלמדת להתבונן, לשאול ולבקש את הסמוי מן העין מתוך אמונה בכוחו של האובייקט ובכוחו של המפרש להיענות ליופי המתגלה במרחב האפשרויות.
