'כבד את אביך ואת אמך, למען יארכון ימיך על האדמה אשר ה' אלהיך נתן לך' נאמר בדיבר החמישי בעשרת הדיברות (שמות פרק כ פסוק יב). זהו הדיבר היחיד בעשרת הדברות ואחת המצוות הבודדות ביהדות בכלל שמופיע בצדו השכר על קיומו. ניתנו כמה פרשנויות לכך שדווקא בדיבר הזה מופיע השכר בצדו ואין זה המקום לפרטן, אך מעניין לראות כי השכר הוא אריכות ימים. כלומר, אם תנהג בכבוד כלפי הוריך, מולידיך, אשר העניקו לך חיים, תוכל לזכות בשנים רבות. השימוש בשכר של אריכות ימים לקיום מצווה כה חשובה ומורכבת, מצביע על הבנת טבע האדם השואף להאריך חיים ולמצותם. ; "עד מאה ועשרים" נוהג לברך איש את רעהו לכבוד יום ההולדת. גם כאן באה לידי ביטוי השאיפה לאריכות ימים, הפעם באמצעות ציון הגיל מאה ועשרים המשמש, לדעתי, מטפורה המבטאת חלום שאי אפשר לממשו כלשונו. ואכן, עד לפני כמה עשורים היה זה בגדר חלום. בראשונה בהיסטוריה האנושית אנו קרובים לממש את החלום הזה. המהפכה הסוציו-דמוגרפית והעלייה הדרמטית בתוחלת החיים הביאה לכך שמספר לא מבוטל של אנשים בארץ ובעולם חצו את גיל המאה.
