Presents the results of a 2005 survey of knowledge of and attitudes toward the Holocaust, carried out in Germany, Austria, Poland, France, Sweden, England, and the U.S. Concludes that basic knowledge about the Holocaust is limited and variable, with the U.S. showing the least knowledge. Attitudes toward Jews and Israel are mixed. Antisemitism is viewed as a serious problem by a quarter or more of respondents in France and Germany, but fewer elsewhere. Everywhere sympathetic views outnumber unsympathetic views of Jews and Israel, but (except for the USA) neutral views are even greater than sympathetic ones. Negative beliefs about exploitation of the Holocaust and too much Jewish influence are common, but only in Poland are over 50%. Overall, attitudes are more positive than negative, but significant levels of anti-Jewish and/or anti-Israel sentiment exist in all the countries. People who favor increasing knowledge about the Holocaust tend to have more positive views toward Jews and Israel.
