סמיתי אייד הוא רווק בן ארבעים ושלוש המתגורר באיסט-פרובידנס, רוד-איילנד. סמיתי הוא גבר שמן, חטיפים ובירות הם עיקר מזונו, הוא מעשן בשרשרת ועובד בעבודה השנואה עליו. בקיצור, סמיתי אייד הוא לוזר אמיתי. והוא גם יודע את זה. לאחר שהוריו נהרגים בתאונת דרכים מגיע לידיו מכתב שנשלח אליהם. כך נודע לו שאחותו בתאני, חולת נפש שעקבותיה נעלמו עשרים וחמש שנה קודם לכן, נמצאה מתה, ושגופתה זוהתה בלוס אנג'לס באמצעות צילומי השיניים שלה שאביו הספיק לשלוח לפני מותו. מתוך כאב, שכרות ותחושת אובדן איומה עולה סמיתי על אופני הראלי הישנים שלו ויוצא למסע אשר תחילתו ברוד איילנד וסופו בבית הלוויות בווניס לוס אנג'לס שם ממתינה לו גופת אחותו ושם גם מתחילים חייו מחדש. מסע שחוצה את ארצות-הברית ומטהר את הנפש, מסע שבמהלכו משיל סמיתי את עודף משקלו, פוגש אנשים רבים ולומד להכיר את עצמו מחדש ולהתחבר אל האהבה ואל כוחות החיים שהיו קבורים בתוכו במשך שנים רבות. השחקן והבמאי רון מקלארטי פורש בשפה מדוברת ומרתקת סיפור קולח, מרגש ומחמם לב. סיפור על טירוף ועל אהבה, סיפור על אנשים פשוטים שנאבקים במכות גורל קשות, סיפור על החלום האמריקני ושברו - אבל גם סיפור של אהבה ותקווה.
