"דניאל הוא ילד צנום, נמוך קומה וממושקף. עם תכונות כאלה - קשה להיות בין המקובלים בכיתה. בעיה. דניאל מאוהב בענבל, בת הכיתה. ענבל ילדה יפה: יש לה חיוך נהדר ועיניים נפלאות ומיוחדות. מה פתאום שתראה בכלל את דניאל, שליבו יוצא אליה? עוד בעיה. ויש עוד עניין שמטיל את צילו הכבד על דניאל: אבא שלו. עזב את הבית עוד לפני שנולד. למה? דניאל לא יודע. גם לאמא שלו אין תשובות, רק כעס העם על האיש שהלך. אולי הבעיה הקשה מכולן. נראה כאילו הקלפים שקיבל דניאל במשחק החיים אינם מוצלחים במיוחד. אבל דניאל לא נשבר. אביחי שמתקרב לאמו, דודו, נכה על כיסא גלגלים שמתיידד עם דניאל, ונועם, ג'ינג'ית מקסימה בעלת עיני תכלת הרואות לתוכו פנימה - עוזרים לדניאל להתגלות לפני חברת הילדים ולפני עצמו. וכל זה קורה בעזרת ”המכוערים” של דניאל. ספר מרתק שלא תוכלו להניחו מידיכם עד לסיום קריאתו. או אל תתחילו לקרוא את המכוערים של דניאל לפני השינה, כי כשיאיר הבוקר - תהיה גם לכם בעיה..." -- מהכריכה האחורית.
