Children writing the Holocaust

Enlarge text Shrink text

Argues that special narrative forms are needed to represent the experiences of children during the Holocaust. Since Holocaust narratives by and about children are characterized by their narrators' inability to understand, child's-eye-view texts are exemplary representations of the events. Discusses experiences of hidden children, including those who were in convents and others who had to pretend to be Catholics. Reports briefly on ca. 20 authors, including Saul Friedländer, Shlomo Breznitz, Georges Perec, Asscher-Pinkhof, Henryk Grynberg, Karen Gershon, Claudine Vegh, Ingrid Kisliuk, Claude Morhange-Bégué, Raymond Federman, Louis Begley, Solomon Perel, Ida Fink, Mary Berg, Ana Novac, Eva Heyman, Dawid Sierakowiak, Yitskhok Rudashevski, and W.G. Sebald. One of the types of literature studied is children's Holocaust diaries.
