גראלד דארל נולד בהודו, ב-1925. בשנת 1928 שבה משפחתו לאנגליה ומשם עברה לגור באי קורפו עד 1939. אותו פרק זמן למד דארל זאולוגיה ועסק בטיפוח חיות בר. ב-1945 ארגן ומימן משלחת מדעית לאיסוף חיות-בר בקאמרון שבאפריקה. לאחר מכן עמד בראש משלחות דומות לגואיאנה הבריטית, לפאראגוואי, ארגנטינה וסיירה ליאונה.ב-1962 יצא עם רעייתו לסידרת צילומים בשביל רשת הטלויזיה B.B.C, בניו-זילנד, אוסטרליה ומאלאיה.דארל הקים את הפארק הזואולוגי ואת רשות שמורות-הטבע של גרסי.מספריו שיצאו לאור בעברית בהוצאת עם עובד: "היער השיכור", "חברברי הסאבאנה". ; "- - - בחוץ היה האי כולו רצועות וטלאים של שחור וכסף, באור הירח. הרחק למטה, בברושים החשוכים, היו הינשופים קוראים נחמות זה אל זה. השמיים היו אפלים ורכים כעורה של חפרפרת, שהכוכבים פיזרו עליו טל רך. עץ המגנוליה התערפל מעל הבית, ענפין עמוסי פרחים לבנים, שנראו כמו מאות השתקפויות זעירות של הירח: וניחוחם הכבד, המתוק, נתלה בעצלתיים על המרפסת, אותו ניחוח שהיה מושך ומפתה אותך אל המרחב הזרוע באורו הפלאי של הסהר. - - -".
