Vol. 1, "Diskriminierung, Verfolgung, Vernichtung", relates to the persecution of Jews living in Elmshorn (Schleswig-Holstein) between 1933-43. Describes the gradual discrimination, including the boycott, the exclusion of Jews from local clubs, and the prohibition of ritual slaughter; in 1938 the last students were forced to leave the Bismarckschule. The application of the Nuremberg Laws led to the prohibition of Jews from practicing their professions and to the Aryanization of Jewish property. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the local synagogue was burned and all Jewish men over 18 were arrested, deported to Sachsenhausen, and then released on condition that they emigrate immediately. In 1933, 84 Jews lived in Elmshorn; in 1939 only 33 remained. In 1941 eight Jews remained in Elmshorn: two of them survived, the fate of two is unknown, one committed suicide, and three were deported. Vol. 2 surveys Jewish history in Elmshorn between 1685-1919.
