A text accompanying an exhibition held at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in May-October 2001. Relates the story of ca. 2,000 Jewish refugees, mainly from Poland and Lithuania, who in 1939-41 managed to leave Nazi-occupied Poland and Soviet-occupied Lithuania and, through the USSR, to reach Japan and China (Shanghai). Describes the historical context of these escapes: Nazi and Soviet aggression against European countries, Nazi anti-Jewish policy, etc. Dwells on the personalities of the Japanese consul in Lithuania, Chiune Sugihara, and his Dutch colleague, Jan Zwartendijk, who helped the Jews reach their destination. Relates personal stories of some refugees, describing their experiences in Japan and China. Includes many photographs.
