Tessler was deported in May 1944, together with his parents and eight brothers and sisters to Auschwitz. From Auschwitz he was transferred, together with his father and two of his brothers, to Warsaw to do slave labor. From Warsaw they were transferred to Dachau and its branch camp Waldlager, in the area of Mühldorf. In April 1945 he was liberated in the area of Munich, by the USA army. Only his father and two of his brothers survived the war. In September 1947 he emigrated to the United States and eventually settled in Chicago.
