Dramatic metaphors of fascism and antifascism

Enlarge text Shrink text

A textual analysis of 20th-century German drama, aiming to highlight how fascist and anti-fascist authors succeeded in expressing their mythologies and ideologies. On pp. 68-79, "Rainer Werner Fassbinder - 'Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod' (1978)" [an expanded version of a paper presented at the "Remembering for the Future" conference in 1988], states that the covert subtext of the play reinforces the antisemitic charge of the overt text; the subtext is based on the mythical version of the part played by Judas in the crucifixion of Jesus. On pp. 79-95, "George Tabori - 'Die Kannibalen' (1968), 'Mein Kampf' (1987), 'Jubiläum' (1983), 'Die Goldberg Variationen' (1991)" [an expanded version of an article which appeared in "Forum Modernes Theater" 8 (1993)], shows how Tabori intertwines Jewish and Christian paradigms in his plays. The Jew, the mythological victimizer, is presented as the victim, tortured by the historical victimizer, the German. This contradictory interplay of two roles assumes the future reconciliation between victim and victimizer and hints at possible forgiveness.
