Memoirs of a Jew (b. 1925) from Breslau, whose parents were deported and killed in 1942. She and a sister, Renate, were arrested while attempting to flee; they were imprisoned in Breslau and sent to Auschwitz. The two sisters survived. Lasker-Wallfisch was a cellist in the camp orchestra, which she describes in detail. Claims that the depiction of the orchestra by another member, Fania Fenelon, is profoundly inaccurate. Far from being a vindictive mob of unruly girls who stole from and betrayed each other at every opportunity, the members of the orchestra (comprised of both Jews and non-Jews) were a community whose members showed concern, support, and friendship for each other. In October 1944 Lasker-Wallfisch was transported to Bergen-Belsen, where she was liberated in April 1945. After the war she worked for the British army, and emigrated to England in 1946. Includes letters written between 1939-42 by the author and her family in Breslau to her sister in England.
