Die Juden in Wiener Neustadt

Enlarge text Shrink text

Surveys the history of the Jews of Wiener Neustadt, Austria, from the beginning of their settlement there in the 13th century until the Nazi period. Mentions anti-Jewish tendencies in regard to the judicial and professional status of the Jews from the 13th century on. Cites the order of the Holy Roman Emperor in 1496 to expel the Jews because of cases of blood libels. Relates cases of torture and forced conversion. Refers to persecutions of Jews in the 17th century. Deals with the Nazi period, mentioning the "Kristallnacht" pogroms. States that modern antisemitism, although not conceivable without a certain heritage from the medieval period, is nevertheless much more dreadful, with its new theological and sociological consolidation and its bureaucratic means, than the preceding model.
