Die Darstellung der Juden in der populären Kunst zur Zeit der Emanzipation
Enlarge text Shrink text- Book
After an introductory chapter on the - not always negative - representation of Jews in medieval and Reformation art and literature, describes images and caricatures of Jews in cheap pictures and leaflets for mass circulation printed in Germany and German-speaking countries from the late 18th to the middle of the 19th century (with some from the early 20th). Shows how these expressed the spirit of the times as well as the personal attitudes of the artist. Some show a sympathetic interest in Jewish life; others embody distorted stereotypes, associate Jews with political foes, satirize Jewish parvenuism, and depict repulsive physical features reflecting a repulsive character. Includes 300 illustrations. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
