Les juifs d'Égypte de Ramses II à Hadrien

Enlarge text Shrink text

Tracing the history of the Jews in Egypt, concentrates mainly on the Greek and Roman periods, using recent discoveries of Egyptian papyri which shed a new light on the events, including antisemitism in Greek and Roman Alexandria - where both popular and intellectual antisemitism were widespread. The main causes of antisemitism in the Greek period were Jewish separatism and non-acceptance of Greek and Egyptian gods. Discusses the deterioration of the status of the Jews in the Roman period caused by political-structural changes in society. In opposition to the Greek period, when the Jews were hellenized and considered "as Greeks", in the Roman period they became "Egyptians". Describes the situation of the Jews under consecutive Roman emperors and governors, up to the Jewish revolt which brought the annihilation of Egyptian Judaism. Deals in detail with the political conflict in which the governor Flaccus was involved, and which led to the pogrom in the year 38 CE.
