Three Jewish communities in medieval Valencia

Enlarge text Shrink text

Consists of three monographs - parts of the first two were published in Spain in 1978 and the third is published here for the first time - on the Jewish communities of Castellón de la Plana, Burriana, and Villarreal in the kingdom of Valencia from the 12th century to the expulsion in 1492. The introduction (pp. 11-31) gives a description of the legal status of the Jews according to the "Furs de València", which made Jews the property of the Crown, prevented them from hiring Christian servants, and imposed the infamous Jewish Oath. Analyzes the history of each community, recalling a whole series of anti-Jewish persecutions (such as the riots of 1391) followed by forced conversions, confinement in ghettos, stoning of Jews during Holy Week, and compulsory sermons, culminating in the 1492 expulsion. Includes documents in Catalan and Latin. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
