A popular retelling in modern English of the first history of Anglo-Jewry, written by D'Blossiers Tovey and published in Oxford in 1738. Covering the period 1066-1727, it includes some translations of sources and many anecdotes concerning English antisemitism. The ironic treatment of the various antisemitic accusations indicates the author's skepticism concerning their veracity. Tovey's introduction argues for toleration of the Jewish religion but against the emancipation of the Jews in England. Includes an appendix (pp. 181-190) with descriptions of the historians quoted in the text.
