"זה איננו ספר מסע גיל, גם לא ספר תיירות. קרליבך חדר לתוך הודו אחרת, הודו בה מיליוני בני אדם משתכשכים באלפי שנות היסטוריה, כדי ליצור ערב-רב של תרבויות. הודו זו, של תרבויות, משמשת לו נייר-לאקמוס לבחינת המערב... קשה כיום, לדור הצעיר שלא ידע ולא קרא את האיש, להסביר את מעמדו של קרליבך בציבור הישראלי של שנות הארבעים והחמישים. בעידן הטלוויזיה, כאשר גיבורי הקהל הם מגישי החדשות, אין העיתונות נהנית עוד מהמוניטין והעוצמה שהיו מנת חלקה בתקופת היוקרה של המלה הכתובה. ; קרליבך היה נסיכם של מושכי העט. כל מאמר שכתב היה מאורע בזעיר אנפין, שבעלי השררה חרדו מפניו ורבבות אזרחים מן השורה ציפו לו, קראו אותו בצמא, התווכחו עליו וציטטו אותו - וחיכו למאמרו הבא. כאשר מת וארונו יצא מבית - הכנסת הגדול בתל - אביב, נסתם רחוב אלנבי באלפי קוראים אבלים, שמעולם לא פגשוהו, רק קראו אותו נאמנה וראה בו שופר ומורה נבוכים. ..[מתוך ההקדמה]." -- מעטפת אחורית.
